The University at Albany is an incredibly diverse and unique SUNY school, and in my opinion is one of the best SUNY schools in the system. The University is constantly improving and redesigning both programs and the physical landscape of the campus. Although the University has taken some heat in the early 2000s for being a “party school”, the University has fought back against these accusations and is striving to produce a better group of graduates.
The University recently has started several great renovations to the physical aspects of the campus, including a new center campus fountain, new football stadium, brand new upper classmen apartment complexes, new transportation center building, redesigned and remodeled campus center, and a brand new state of the art business school. In addition, the expansion of the Nanotech campus has been huge, and is the number one nanotechnology complex in the country, over Ivy League universities such as Yale.
Academically, standards for the University have increased greatly in recent years, making the incoming classes much more academically focused. With a much stricter atmosphere, the school’s reputation as a party school is behind it, with little partying actually occurring after incidents in past years took things too far. The once wild house parties of Albany on Hudson Avenue are no more, and all bars who were serving underage students have been shut down.
In terms of campus life, the food program has been changed as well, which should hopefully bring an improvement to the campus atmosphere, as in the past the food service has been mediocre.
As a 2012 graduate of the University, I am happy with my four years spent there. Not once during my four years did I second guess my choice to go to UAlbany, although I do question whether or not I should have made different academic choices.
In terms of job placement, many students have had success in job placement in New York City, but locally job placement has been tough. The job market is still absolutely terrible, with many jobs receiving hundreds of applicants per position, many of whom are way overqualified for the position. Depending on your major, job placement varies. As a business major, I was able to find a position in my field shortly after graduating, but not ultimately what I had imagined during college. Despite this, I feel my ambition and experiences learned throughout my four years will help me throughout my career, and I can always choose to get a graduate degree if I would like. MBA programs through the University have a very high job placement success rate.
Overall, this is a good college, particularly for someone who is local and is looking for an affordable value. It has had its rough patches, but overall is increasingly considerable in academic excellence, aesthetics of the campus, and overall reputation and quality of education. SUNY Albany is a great way to avoid debt, and still get a great education that you can take with you for the rest of your life. Education is the one asset you can never lose.
While the administration brags about the quality of their students, it does nothing to support the good ones who work had and abide by the rules. Drinking and drugs are rampant on campus and in the dorms, and the school does nothing about it. I could never recommend this school for any serious student. The university President is completely inept.
shitty school, full of idiot losers, good if you live near by i suppose
the best
this school sucks
