3 Student Reviews of Georgia Institute of Technology

  • The EE school is worthless. Atlanta and the state of Georgia has no industry whatsoever that will employ you after you graduate. All the jobs in Georgia are for computer science and programming not electrical engineering. The majority of controls jobs go to graduates of DeVry, ITT tech, Ranken, etc, or go to very experienced northerners who constantly migrate south for the weather or get transfers. Also, unique to Tech, EE’s are bared from all programming courses in the CS school, at least back in ’87 when I graduated, I was not allowed to take C++, or any programming other than fortran. This was devastating to my employment. So many EE jobs are asking for C++ and I was not allowed. Tech should be a college of last resort if you cannot get into a reputable school.

  • Wow! Guys, if you just read this, then what are you waiting for! Apply to Tech now!!! GReat JOB!!!! I LOVE TECH!

    Overall Score: (4.36/5.00)
  • Disclaimer: “I am a Chemical Engineering major, therefore most of what I will say, applies to engineers and some would apply to other majors as well. Please take other opinions in to consideration and don’t just take my word for selecting your university!”
As you already know, great school for Engineering Majors. Very prestigious school and definitely kicks your ass in keeping its name. Professors for most part are not the greatest teachers of all. However, a majority is ready to help you out in and out of class. There are also some profs who just read over the slides and do stuff that would want to make you think twice before going to class. More than intelligence, Tech distinctly asks for regularity and organization in your work. If you finish your homework on the day its assigned, you’re in good shape. However, exams are times when Tech really makes you feel like crying. If you’re one of those people who cram the night before an exam, there only a handful of courses you can expect an A in. The tech rule of spending 3 hours of your time for 1 credit hour taken will certainly guarantee a 4.0 if you properly follow it.
Also, one more important issue: “the ratio”
People say the ratio is really bad making a 30 girl to 70 boy assumption. However, it really depends whom do you approach. The ratio appears good to me, although, there are fewer hot girls and teachers compared to those back in my high school. For girls, this place is like a bee hive filled with guys. They won’t have any problem getting around.
There are a billion things to do here. Apart from regular classes, Tech also offers Options class which includes development of other skills like dancing, playing instruments, getting active. For me, breakdancing appeared as the perfect option.
Students in general are very warm in welcoming freshmen and helping them out in every way possible. Till today, I’ve been helped everytime I asked a question. The key is to overcome the fear of asking questions and you should be pretty successful at Tech. Also, Tech provides one of best Research facilities in the United States. Undergraduate Research is a great option that allows students to work with a professor in researching tough issues using the high-tech equipment. Additionally, Tech never faces any funding problem which means researchers can order almost anything and everything they want to help them complete the experiment.
Housing, for most part, sucks at Tech. In a way thats good because it motivates students to get out of their room and spend most of the day outside. However, the flip side is equally bad. Freshmen dorms suck. Only a handful of newly renovated are awesome. The rest are pretty old. However, apartments are fairly large and comfortable to stay in.
Meal plans are expensive, and the food in the cafeteria is okay. Not too impressive.
Job opportunities are way too good at Tech. With a career, internship, coop fair every year, there almost countless opportunities to get in touch with virtually any company present in the United States and guarantee a job before you graduate. If you get in to Tech, unless you drop out, you’re 100% guaranteed to find a job before you even graduate.
At Tech we firmly believe in the saying, “We work hard, we play hard.” Tech will definitely turn you into a person you might not have imagined, and the best part is that you will immediately be able to see the difference the moment you step into the work force. You will be able to see how much more you have achieved than your peers when you step out of Tech, even if its only an internship.
Apart from that, Tech is a place to make friends without even putting any effort. As a freshmen, you will experience numerous social events wherein you will be easily able to make new friends, because here at Tech we don’t harbor any arrogance. Although, we might appear arrogant to the rest of the world, but that is out of sheer frustration of facing the hardships Tech has to offer. But, then again, it absolutely depends on the person, whether he or she is arrogant or not to begin with.
Tech definitely makes you feel as if you belong to it. It makes you an integrated part of the big Tech family and will most certainly help you make “a home away from home.”
Also, one more little piece of advice: “please, please learn to use your common sense before talking to friends.” Here at Tech, we people just love to rip on people who don’t know how to use their common sense yet. However, we make sure we’re not making him/her feel uncomfortable and still accept the person as he/she is.
The area around Tech is way too good. To begin with, the strategic location of Tech makes it extremely lively place. Its located in the heart of Atlanta with a part of our campus in Atlanta midtown. Therefore, if you step out of Tech, you’re in midtown, the center of Atlanta. You can possibly find almost anything and everything you would want to do in a city.
Nightlife, for people who love to party, is a really nice bonus upon acceptance to Tech. The moment you get your email address and you start attending Tech, if you have a facebook account, you’re inbox will start flooding with invitations to places like Opera, Loca luna, Geisha house, and many other places.
Apart from that, Atlantic station, a 20 min walk from Tech campus, harbors almost all high-end retail stores for shopaholics and Regal cinema for movie freaks like me. Although, a little expensive, worth the money when you’ve worked your butt off the entire week.
In addition to that, the CRC (campus recreation center) is probably the best and largest school gym you would see in the South-East US. Georgia Tech held the olympics in 1966, which should tell you a lot about its large CRC.
Being a public university, Tech appears to be a very affordable place to study for in-state as well as out of state students.
Student to Teacher ratio is very high for freshmen class. For instance most of your freshmen classes except for languages, will have 200-300 students. However, starting second year, with your major courses, Student Teacher ratio improves drastically, as the number of students per class drops to a range of 10-20 depending on your class.
The staff here at Tech is probably the most helping staff I have experienced. They are polite and will go out of their way to help you with your issues personally.
Also, I am sure you must have already checked USNews by now, which should tell you that Tech has most of its Engineering majors ranked in the top 10 categories. For more information, please surf through Tech’s website:
    http://www.gatech.edu

Therefore, if you’re interested in Engineering, please think twice before you apply to MIT, or Caltech, because just below those two schools falls Tech.
Best of luck with you application process and I hope you get in to the school of your choice.
    Karan
