6 College Myths You Should Know As A Freshman

By   |  November 7, 2012

Going into college as a freshman can be a scary experience. Whether you just entered college this past fall or you’re entering in the future, you have to realize that there are a lot of myths out there that are floating around. To help you bust these myths, here are some that you will probably hear but aren’t true at all, I promise you!

1. Teachers Don’t Care. While college is different than high school, many incoming freshman often think that the teachers won’t care since the classrooms are going to be so large. Sure, while there may be some teachers that don’t care, a majority of them are really going to want you to succeed. If you think you can slack off, you may want to think again.

2. Everyone Hits the Freshman 15. If you’ve never heard of the freshman 15, this is where the incoming freshman gain around 15 pounds due to poor diets and no exercise. Yes, freshmen can gain weight, but it doesn’t happen to just that particular class of people. Sophomores, juniors and seniors all can gain weight like no tomorrow. By exercising and watching your diet, there’s no reason to gain the pounds.

3. Overdrinking Isn’t That Big. When you watch a movie, it’s always the college kids drinking, right? Well, when you step on any college campus, what you’re going to find is that this is definitely the case. Many incoming freshman often think that the movies perceive a reality that isn’t true, when in fact, it is! While most freshmen drink, there are some that keep clean. Just be prepared to see massive parties on the streets, in the dorms and anywhere a drink can be found.

4. It’s College – Everyone is Mature. Most think of college as a mature place, and while most of the older students tend to behave, many find that the incoming freshmen can be a pain in the butt. Since most of them haven’t been away from home before, they tend to do anything their parents wouldn’t be proud of. Just be prepared to see an influx of young 18-year olds that don’t know how to behave.

5. Upperclassmen Hate You. Like high school, most think that they are going to walk on campus the first day and get laughed out of town by the junior and senior class. This couldn’t be further from the truth. As mentioned in tip four, many of the students on campus want to network, help with classes and what you will find is that most of the classes you take will be with upperclassmen.

6. Everyone is Smart! Hey! Its college and everyone should be smart, right? Yes, if you’re attending an Ivy League school such as Harvard, most people are going to be brainiacs, but with most colleges, you’re still going to have the duds on the campus. You will still find people that show up late, drop classes, forget homework and just don’t care. Why? It’s hard to say. Just remember that when you leave college, you’re going to run into this in the corporate world too!

  1. I look at my college days as a major investment. Sadly, it was a waste of money.
